Life Insurance Awareness Month: Understanding the Basics

September 05, 2025

September is recognized as Life Insurance Awareness Month, which makes it a natural time to take the opportunity to pause and reflect on how life insurance can affect a financial plan. While the subject may feel uncomfortable at first — after all, it requires thinking about life’s uncertainties — life insurance is ultimately about creating financial security for the people and causes that matter most.

What Is Life Insurance?

At its core, life insurance is a contract between an individual and an insurance company, where the insurer agrees to provide insurance coverage in exchange for regular payments, otherwise known as “premiums”. In the event of the passing of the person insured under the contract, the insurer pays a benefit to the listed beneficiaries on the policy.

When discussing life insurance, there are two broad categories of coverage:

Term Life Insurance provides coverage for a set period of time (for example, 10, 20, or 30 years). If the insured passes away during that term, the benefit is paid out. Term policies are often considered straightforward and typically have lower premiums than permanent policies.

Permanent Life Insurance includes products like whole life, universal life, and variable life insurance. These policies are designed to last a lifetime, as long as premiums are paid, and some build cash value over time. Permanent insurance often carries higher premiums but can also offer additional features beyond the death benefit.

Why Is Life Insurance Important?

For many families, life insurance serves as a financial safety net. The benefit can help replace lost income, cover living expenses, and provide stability during a difficult time.

Some of the most common reasons people choose to have life insurance include:

Income Replacement: Helping loved ones maintain their lifestyle(s) if a primary earner passes away.

Debt Protection: Covering obligations such as a mortgage, car loans, or student loans.

Legacy Planning: Leaving behind resources for future generations or charitable causes.

Estate Liquidity: Providing funds that may be used to help pay estate taxes or settle financial obligations without forcing the sale of assets.

In each case, the purpose is the same: to provide peace of mind that others will be financially supported when it matters most.

How Much Coverage Is Appropriate?

Determining the “right” amount of life insurance doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. Needs vary based on income, family size, outstanding debts, and long-term goals. Some people use general rules of thumb (such as a multiple of annual income), while others prefer detailed calculators to better understand their coverage needs.

For some, combining different types of coverage makes sense. For instance, term insurance might provide protection during higher-need years — such as while raising children or paying off a mortgage — while a permanent policy may serve longer-term goals like legacy or estate planning.

Common Misconceptions

Life insurance can sometimes feel misunderstood. A few examples:

“I only need it if I have dependents.” In reality, individuals without children may still use life insurance to cover debts, care for other family members, or leave a charitable gift.

“My employer’s policy is enough.” While workplace policies can be valuable, they may not be portable if you change jobs and might not provide enough coverage on their own.

“It’s only about the death benefit.” Permanent policies, for example, may also include a cash value component that some policyholders view as part of their broader planning.

Bringing It All Together

Life insurance is not about preparing for the worst, but about protecting the future. It can help families stay in their homes, keep education goals on track, and provide stability when it’s needed most. Whether used for income replacement, debt protection, or legacy planning, life insurance is ultimately a way to create financial reassurance during uncertain times.
